Frugal October Food Finds

October 13th, 2009 admin

October can be an “in-between” time at many grocery stores. It’s still too early to see great sales on the stereotypical holiday bargains like hams, turkeys, or baking supplies. However, with summer long gone, you also don’t see the specials that feature hot dogs, buns, and other summer foods. Don’t be too discouraged, though. If you’re looking to build up some of your staple items, October is a great month. Here are some of the things you can expect WILL be on sale: Breakfast Cereals – In the absence of other sales, grocery stores seem to fall back on sales on various types of cold cereal. My favorite store has Kellogg’s cereals on sale this week. Don’t forget to consider the non-breakfast uses you might have for cereals, too, as you make your shopping list…

October Best Bargains
Are you looking for some good buys this month? I’m always hoping to find a good price on one of the items that’s already on my shopping list, so I look around at a lot of different places. I check them all: discount stores, shopping centers, and websites. This October, as you’re on the hunt for a bargain or two, be on the lookout for these...
How to Score Big at the Thrift Store
This is my favorite time of year for thrift store shopping. Why? Because many folks are cleaning out their closets and de-cluttering before the holidays and the end of the year. Many people will not bother to have a garage sale because they are too busy this time of year and so many items are donated to the local thrift shop. Shopping at thrift stores...
Frugal but Fun Food for Your New Year’s Celebration
Food can often be one of the most expensive parts of any party costs. Food costs can add up in a hurry. In fact, some people can be so intimidated by the prospect of having to provide food for all of their friends and family members that they decide to avoid throwing a party altogether. Don’t let worries about food expenses keep you from throwing...
10 Reasons to Avoid Holiday Shopping Sales
10 Reasons to Avoid Holiday Shopping Sales
There is no inherent reason for running sales during holidays. Aside from Christmas (which is centered on gifts), it makes little sense to get whipped into a frenzy over a Mothers Day sale or, most pointless of all, a Presidents Day sale. More often than not, hyped-up sales events like these generate little more than false hopes, headaches, and...
Tips for Finding Garage Sale Deals
Garage sale shopping can be an adventure. You’re never certain what you’re going to find. One sale might result in some fun toys for the kids. Another might allow you to buy a new dresser. I’ve even heard of people buying cars at estate sales. Garage sales rock! If you’re reading this and wondering how I find great garage sale deals, you’re...
Shop, Save and Support Breast Cancer Awareness
Those pink colored packages are making their way back onto the store shelves as Breast Cancer Awareness month (October) approaches. This is a great opportunity to save money on grocery items and support a great cause – a true Win – Win situation! As one example, Proctor & Gamble is making a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation...
Last Chance to Use Those Summer Coupons
It is hard to believe, but Labor Day arrives next Monday, bringing the summer grocery sales to a close. Stores have been working for weeks to clear shelves of seasonal items like inflatable wading pools and beach balls to make room for the upcoming Fall and Winter holiday items. It may be less obvious, but the end of August and beginning of…  Read More →
Eating Well On $1 A Day: Day 13 – I Hate Shopping
Eating Well On $1 A Day: Day 13 – I Hate Shopping
Today was an extremely busy day. I spent the vast majority of it going from grocery store to grocery store buying cereal for local food banks in my area to take advantage of the great cereal deal where you can get it for free / nearly free . A day of shopping confirmed what I already knew – I hate shopping. Now, most people would ask me...
Eating Well On $1 A Day: Day 10 – One Third Done
Eating Well On $1 A Day: Day 10 – One Third Done
I am finding that having a busy schedule is not conductive to eating on $1 a day — well, at least not when it comes to making meals with limited amounts of food when in a hurry. I’m currently at a crossroads waiting to see what the grocery store sales are going to bring on Wednesday (most grocery stores start their new sales cycle...
