When is a deal a good deal? Unless something is absolutely free, we are necessarily paying for it, so how do we decide if something is worth buying? Even if something is absolutely free, there may still be costs associated with transporting it, storing it, using it or disposing of it. The

Free Shipping – Deal or No Deal?
According to USA Today, shoppers have switched their thinking about receiving free shipping for their online purchases. With money being as tight as it is, shoppers now figure that free shipping is not a deal really, but rather a mandatory service in exchange for their business. And, the free shipping expectation includes a “no strings attached”...
Is Anyone Buying This Free Deal?
I’ve noticed over the last week or two a new type of deal cropping up: the Free Thanksgiving Dinner Deal, otherwise known as the “Holiday Rewards“ deal. A number of supermarket chains have hit on the idea that a “Spend $XXX dollars and get a free turkey dinner” deal will be a sure fire winner this November. They know from long experience...
What’s the Deal With One-Deal-a-Day Sites?
One-deal-a-day sites are popular because they often offer rock-bottom prices on a variety of products, but in a fun “buy it before it sells” environment. Not to be confused with the deal-of-a-day bargains found on many retailers’ websites, one-deal-a-day sites only offer one product, for one day, or until it sells out. Read more…...

A particularly instructive example of this came to my attention a couple of weeks ago. SuperFresh began advertising a “ Save XX% off on your next order (ONYO) ” deal that you definitely...
Bottled Water and Emergency Preparedness
Generally, I’m not a fan of buying bottled water. First, it’s usually expensive; it is, after all, just water. Second, bottled water isn’t necessarily purified, high quality, or better than tap water. There can also be issues with some types of plastic bottles that may not be recyclable or may leech chemicals from the plastic into the water....

Going nuts at yard sales and auctions is SO out
Going nuts at yard sales and auctions is SO out
Once in a great while we really internalize something about managing money. Auctions and yard sales used to be a weakness of mine.  I’d go stark-raving crazy buying up all of these bargains for (a) things I had an immediate use for, (b) things I didn’t have an immediate use for, but were such a good deal, and (c) things I had no need...
