I was skeptical about this tip when I first saw it several months ago. I felt stupid trying it. But I have to say, after getting excellent results from the same disposable blade for the last 5 months, it really does work. You read that right by the way; five months of weekly use from one disposable razor blade cartridge. In my case, it’s the Schick Extreme 3 which was 75% off at King Soopers. I bought about 40 cartridges, enough to last...

Lowering my intake of carbohydrates has been one of the biggest struggles of my life. I don’t have a particularly sweet tooth — if you told me I could never have cake or pie again, I’d be bummed, but I’d get over it. But giving up bread? Pasta? Rice noodles? I’ve written about the evils of junk food in the past. I have jumped on that bandwagon that is happy to demonize the fast food industry. But after watching a 30-minute TV show on Showtime last week, I’m having something of a paradigm shift. Maybe I’ve been too hasty. The Showtime show Bullsh*t! I’ve been examining healthcare plans for a couple of decades, starting with sticker shock when I signed up for COBRA coverage in 1986 (over $300 per month). Since then, I’ve been covered under employer-based plans and private individual plans, spending close to zero all the way to thousands of dollars each year for insurance coverage and medical bills. There’s a lot to consider when looking at healthcare plans, including: Guaranteed...

In the past, I’ve been lucky enough to have very good health insurance. And before health insurance, I had the National Health Service in Britain. So it’s fair to say I haven’t really been fully invested in the healthcare debates that have steadily increased in the U.S. over the last few years. However, after recent events in both my life and the lives of friends and family around me, I am becoming more and more frustrated...

For the first time in living history, the life expectancy of America’s children is less than that of their parents. In other parts of the world, however, people are living longer, healthier lives. In certain areas known as Blue Zones, people tend to live well...

By Philip Brewer A long time ago, I had an idea. I was working a regular job, but I realized that what I wanted to do was be a writer. I figured that I could make some money writing, but not necessarily enough to support myself. So, I came up with a naive plan. It started with living more frugally. I did all the ordinary frugal …  Read More →
